Common signs of Pain in Pets

Many pet owners think that their pet must not be in pain because they are not yelping or crying. Often pets hide their pain, the signs they show are more subtle. For pets this is a survival mechanism and if they show pain by vocalizing they are more likely to fall prey to another animal. Listed are the most common signs that pets will show when they are having pain. If you have concern that your pet is painful schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

Eye Pain

• Squinting
• Eye discharge
• Rubbing at the face

Ear Pain

• Head shaking
• Scratching or rubbing at the ears
• Ear odor or discharge
• Tilting the head

Mouth Pain

• Change in eating habits, dropping food
• Chewing on one side
• Bleeding from the mouth
• Odor from the mouth

Joint Pain

• Limping
• Holding up a leg
• Licking over the joints
• Change in gait
• Unwilling to jump or use stairs
• Decreased grooming (cats)

Skin Pain

• Licking or chewing
• Scratching
• Rolling or rubbing

General Pain

• Hiding
• Decreased eating and drinking
• Not interacting with people or other pets
• Decreased activity
